As if I didn’t have enough to do…making baby food for the twins

Seriously, I had no intention of making all the twin’s food.  My parents literally brought me a bucket of pears early last fall and I thought, “what am I going to do with these?”  So, I decided when life hands you pears, make baby food!  After seeing how easy it was to turn the pear into a baby puree, I never looked back.  I initially thought I would just make fruit purees, but after I got started I quickly wanted to expand my repertoire.  The book 201 Organic Baby Purees, by Tamika L. Garner is my current favorite baby food cookbook.

Making my own baby food also justified using all organic ingredients, because I can make it for less than non-organic jarred food.  I know exactly what the girls are eating and there are zero preservatives.  Plus, have you looked at that jarred stuff? Totally grossed me out when we got to meats!

Here are some photos from one of the girls’ favorites recipes,  applesauce!

Used my spiralizer to make quick work of some gala apples.

After boiling for 10 minutes, transfer to the food processor.

Once puréed, add spices.

I freeze any leftovers as ice cubes for easy reheating.

I try to make large batches so I have lots of leftovers to freeze, but nothing lasts very long with two mouths. This batch will last me about 2 months eating it 2-3 times a week. They love this applesauce, but their absolute favorite food right now requires no cooking, avocado!

I would definitely encourage any new or soon-to-be moms to consider making your own baby food!
